Laundry Room Upgrades on a Budget.

Let’s face it, it’s the least loved room in the entire home, and likely, the least used too. But…laundry…the necessary evil.  So, if we must, we can at minimum create a space that doesn’t give us hives when we walk in. Right?

Let’s jump right in!

The Room.

First, you’re going to need to take a good look at your space, get measurements and then set realistic expectations of what you can achieve in the area you have, and also within the budget you’ve set. Usually laundry rooms have a lot more available “real estate” on the walls as machines use up quite a lot of the floor area, so make sure you’re utilizing the empty space, rather than creating a traffic jam on the floor. You know what I mean, you’ve got baskets galore and they’re quite literally closing in on you, or is that just me?

Part of what we want to do when just considering the room is figuring out how we want to “refresh” the immoveable, i.e. the walls and the floor.

Storage. Shelving. Cabinets.

This is where is gets fun. Choosing what best suits your needs as well as the space you have available, make sure you are creating a space that is not only beautiful but functional.  We want a room that works, but also a room we want to work in.  If choosing open shelving, you can really elevate your cleaning products by using glass or vintage canisters for storage.  Decorative baskets can provide you with extra storage with style.

Lighting.

Do not. I repeat, do NOT conceal or obstruct any natural light sources in the room.  We want that beautiful sunshine pouring in on us, it’s Vitamin D, man!  If your room lacks windows (and even if it doesn’t) installing a fun light fixture takes the room from functional to fab! Even on a tight budget, this one simple change can make a huge difference in the space.  Forget that outdated, industrial bulb on a string – be bold, hang a modern chandelier if it fits your aesthetic! Whatever your style, bring it into the laundry area to breathe new life and light into the room.

Finishing Touches.

I hope you find the encouragement to tackle that “little loved” room in your home.  With some updating, and a little personality infusion – it may even become enjoyable! *Gasp!*  I know I have found inspiration here and cannot wait to put some of these tips and tools to use in my own Laundry Room!
