Big Ideas for Small Bathrooms

Let’s face it, if you have a small bathroom or a bathroom with “less than”, storage space – you’ve probably been frustrated more than not.  I set out to find some realistic solutions to this BIG problem.  Unless you have plans to do a major remodel to extend the space, we need to work within the space we have. I found a great article about this very topic at Home Funky. Listed here are some of my favorite tips, you can click the link below to see her full list of ideas:

Towel Hooks vs. Towel Bar –

While Towel Bars have been the standard “go to” for towel hanging and storage, they just don’t offer the greatest use for limited spaces. While a bar holds a single towel, individual hooks in the same space can hold multiple towels. Installing hooks just 6 inches apart allows you to fit four hooks in the same space as a single bar, and gives each towel plenty of room to air dry.

Floating Shelves –

I can’t be the only person who isn’t loving the floor-standing, over the toilet space savers these days.  Instead, install floating shelves over the toilet for a fresh, updated look. These shelves are great for multi-purpose storage – allowing you to blend style with functionality.  Show off those cute towels you just picked up, grab a fun glass canister to hold Q-tips, add a quirky bathroom quote – the options are endless! Floating Shelves also allow you to maximize whatever space you’re working with – they come in a variety of lengths!

Bright, Airy Color Palette –

What does color have to do with maximizing the space in your small bathroom? Well, in terms of storage…nothing! However, no matter where we are in our home, we want the space to be a place of refuge and calm. More often than not, small spaces can cause stress, even if you aren’t claustrophobic.  Light colors give an appearance of spaciousness, allowing light to travel and make the space feel larger. Remember, we’re working with what we have – so let’s make the most of every square inch!

Plants –

While we’re already in the space of aesthetics, instead of storage – let’s go ahead and get plants out of the way too! (Thank you for indulging me!)  Plants are a great way to create calm and bring a little bit of nature indoors, as well as being great for keeping the air we breath clean! Spider Plants and Pothos are great options since both thrive in low light and humid conditions. Here’s a link to some other great options –

Ladder Shelves –

If you’ve got floor space to spare, ladder shelves are a great way to use that vertical space! As with the floating shelves, these allow you to combine style and function, showing some personality with creative storage, look for pieces that serve you in both capacities – baskets, boxes, glass dishes, trays, etc. Whether you love clean lines and sleek storage or ornate and vintage pieces have your heart, you can find just the right pieces to add to your room, while keeping everything tidy!

Small Stool or Bench with Lower Shelf –

Have a small, empty spot near the tub or shower?  These small stools are great for those everyday essentials at your fingertips – whether you just need a place for an extra towel, soaps and necessities or you want to create a little retreat with a candle, book and a cup of coffee.  This look really captured my attention, and I love the idea of a small little oasis of pampering and don’t we all really need it! Here’s a cute little stool I found that would work well in even the smallest spaces!

We hope you’ve found inspiration here in this short list of solutions for small bathrooms. Whatever your challenges, get creative, utilize those empty spaces and see how the space you have begins to look and work differently for you!
